After a lot of deliberating and looking at a heap of different bikes I narrowed my choice down to 2 bikes namely a BMW R1200 RS and a Trophy SE. The Triumph got the nod because it was around $6k cheaper than the BMW and was a better fit for me plus has so many features as standard. I did look at the FJR1300 but it seemed to be old technology plus I guess owning a Triumph sits better with me than a Yamaha. Triumph heritage gets into your blood.

Totally different from my Bird but it is a very lazy and comfortable tourer. Not as fast or torquey as the Bird but will get the job done . Had it 3 days and clocked up about 1800kms so it is run in.

Looks like I join Paffy in the comfortable but slow lounge.

Congratulations on the new bike. I've never ridden one, but they look great!
Unfortunately, they're supposed to be joining the 'Bird in Triumph's "has-been" lineup.
Pretty sad.

Lovely motors in those Trophies, I reckon you think it lacks torque because the power builds through the revs, but if you did in-gear roll-ons from low revs, I bet you'd find the Trophy will destroy the Thunderbird.

I think the tourer market has switched to big adventure bikes, similarly few people buy estate cars any more - it's all SUVs. We live in the style over content era .

Haven't ridden the 1200 (yet) but I have ridden 800, 955i and 1050 triples. Wonderful motors!

Steve I am surprised that you find it comfy, we are similar heights and when they first hit the show room floors I sat on one a few times but found them very cramped with the bars way to close.

Enjoy the ride though, I'd like a third bike but just can't get excited about anything atm, have even been thinking about an outfit!!

Dealer gave me one for a week to try out. Great bike but I found it soulless. Music system was good - I could hear it loud and clear at 90. I found myself getting bored and kept messing with the functions. An effortless ride and I was comfy on it - but I did nearly drop it a couple of times - probably due to my restricted vertical appearance. If I did a lot of motorway riding it is probably what I would have.

I find the riding position different from the Bird. It is more upright with your legs not as far forward as the Bird but on a trip I usually rest my feet on the passenger peg of the Bird anyway. Lee, the seat height can be adjusted and I have it on the higher setting which is good for me.

As far as torque and roll on the Trophy is not even within a cat's whisker of the Bird. My Bird has 170hp and 164ft lb torque so it is a demon in roll-on acceleration. I bought the Trophy as a tourer and for that purpose it is great plus I thought it was well priced as I got it with only 180kms on it for $18,000 so I have nothing to lose. If I don't like it I will sell it and buy something else. I am actually the first registered owner of the bike as it was a Triumph demo. It is a 2017 model so all in all I am happy with the purchase.

I know Triumph have stopped making them as thy are concentrating on the Bonny and Explorer range but they are not bikes I am after. Maybe a Diavel next time round.

I am now thinking that two bikes is a bit uneven as I have space for another one hmmmm.......

I like your attitude mate.

Why go for less, if you have room for three.

Exited to hear what you will add to your stable, I like you choosing the Trophy.

Thanks mate, I probably won't get a chance to try that as my dealer only ever stocked the odd one or two, I still have a thing for the Sprint GT, but not sure my knees and wrists would hold up.

I have room for twenty or so bikes

Nobody is suggesting a Trophy will out grunt a supercharged tbird, the comparison is clearly meant to be between standard bikes. That said, top gear on a 'bird is so long - even a supercharged bike will struggle. A standard Rocket will kill a supercharged tbird from 70 mph in top gear for that reason. I bet a stock Trophy would put up a good fight. Obviousky if the rider has choice of gear then the 'charged 'bird will walk it.

The Bird is something special and I have kept it longer than I have ever kept anything with wheels and a motor except maybe the lawnmower. I never tire of riding it and all the mods I have done have enhanced the performance and since getting it properly sorted has been reliable and trouble free. Do I use the power...NO...but it is nice to have and sit surprises a lot of bikes and cars that think they are the duck's nuts.

The Trophy is a silky smooth tourer which I believe is perfect for the purpose it was made. Plenty of protection for the rider and a host of riding aids make it a very easy distance muncher. On my first few days I got over 500kms before I filled up so weekend trips will be a breeze.

It is good to have a choice of rides and bikes, unlike cars, stir the soul and keep us young. I would hate to think I had a bike for transport only.

Morning Steve.
Now you have the bunged up eye repaired and a new set of wheels that will eat the miles why don't you aim it towards Texas this weekend so we can compare it with the non black one that "Paffy" straddles.??????????.
I am heading up on the Friday and staying at Moree Thermal pools to give my frozen shoulder a bit more therapy, heading over to Texas at lunchtime Sat.
Hope to See you there.?????????
Cheers
Steve

G'day Steve,

I would love to come but because of the surgery I will be off any sort of wheels for a couple of weeks. You will not want to leave the thermal pools. They smell like sulphur but you will come out feeling a million bucks. Ride safe old mate and I look forward to catching up soon.

Enjoy the ride....
Steve

Oh yeah ... can't beat the triple thing. Three bikes are a must. Although the do say that three's a crowd ... maybe you need four! That said a FFM threesome is marvellous (provided that I'm the M in FFM)

i like the sound of a threesome too, swagger
i feel inadequate with my two trumpets, and think i would like a '60's style hardtail chopper, with a meriden 650 motor, that pisses oil out and breaks down 8 out of every 10 outings. make me feel young and alive.

Tell him he thinks its the best bike he has ever owned because he has never had a supercharged T Bird. Still, it's a Triumph so it shows he is a man of style and taste.

Shit,170hp Tbird? Bet you've smoked some sport bikes he he. I'm curious have you had to replace a belt and how many miles do you have on her? I like your taste in bikes Steve. I've always wanted a Trophy too. Scared myself off when I let one fall over on a test ride. Cost me about a 1,000 bucks. I like the 1050 engine though. Maybe someday I'll give the Trophy Another try.

Oooh that's gotta hurt ... trashing someone else's bike and then having to pay for it. I saw a bloke drop a Ducati 1098 demo bike once ... that cost him.

Hi PES,

I have done about 23000kms since supercharging the bike and it has around 70k on it in total. When I did the supercharger I also put in JE forged pistons, new reinforced clutch basket and prior to that had changed the cams, shocks, front springs and had it custom painted so not too many standard items on it but it is a very tractable and sweet ride. The shop that did all the work have now supercharged a Thruxton R and know what to do with bikes to make them go fast. They are also a Triumph dealer so all in all my bike has been in good hand. Tuning work was done by Tuneboy and the next step will be to get different injectors to give a better fuel flow down low.

I have not changed the belt and everything is running nice and smooth. The Trophy is a totally different animal.

Can you remember the manufacturer of your uprated clutch basket? I've got a horrible feeling about mine!

My wife was fed up with the buffeting on the triumph cruisers, the storm and R3 so dealer sent me home with the trophy for several days. The reason I didn't buy it was being 5'7" in 2up preload with the mrs on back I was like a pygmy with a boner at stop,I also dropped once at light but, for all that seat height the seating was cramped so for the price of the ttse I bought a used gtl that fit better but doesn't provide the protection of the trophy. Wife is comfy and the tourer is my 2nd bike. The I-6 is like an electric motor and the day she quits riding i'm going back to a triumph R3 or Storm.
